JP back for Sharks as they try to avoid being first Highlanders scalp in 2013 (teamsheet)

John Plumtree has opted for a youthful pack to take on the bottom-of-the-log Highlanders, who have lost all 8 games so far this season. He contrasts this with a potent backline boasting Springboks from 9 to 15 (Riaan Viljoen has played midweek for the Boks). Having dropped to 3rd in the South African conference, the Sharks will be hungry to get their push for a playoff spot back on track, but will they be as hungry as the desperate men from Dunedin?

Changes/Milestones:

  • JP Pieterson returns on the right wing
  • Springbok wing Lwazi Mvovo returns from a hand injury in the number 11 jersey
  •  Lubabalo Mtembu retains his place at no.8 after an impressive run-on debut last weekend
  • Keagan Daniel returns at open side flank and will captain the team
  • Last week’s captain Jean Deysel drops down to the bench

Sharks lose Beast for a month

Rugby InjuryThe Sharks lost the high flying Cheetahs on the weekend and the frustration of their third loss weighed on Plumtree.

“We created plenty of opportunities and I thought we played all the rugby, I think the Cheetahs played no rugby. They just kicked the ball away all night. We wanted to be a bit more ambitious and as positive as we could, but weren’t entirely accurate. Losing tonight’s a big set-back. We needed that win big time before going on tour, but didn’t quite get it and that puts us under a fair bit of pressure now.” Plumtree said.

Other injury worries include on loan Lion Andries Coetzee who went off during the loss with what looks to be a dislocated shoulder.

This injury impact will hugely effect the team as they prepare for their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s not looking good for Beast (Mtawarira) and he won’t be on the plane tomorrow. He’s probably out for four weeks, I was really disappointed about Andries, because I thought he played really well too. He could be out for a couple of months.” Plumtree said.

Baby Boks force Sharks changes

Sharks coach John Plumtree has had to make changes to his squad ahead of the SA derby against the Lions due to players being snatched away by the SA u20 squad.

Both center Paul Jordaan and lock Pieter-Steph du Toit have been called up to the Baby Boks training camp ahead of the u20 World Cup inSouth Africa next month.

Meyer Bosman and JP Peitersen will pair up in the center as Tim Whitehead recovers from injury and Jordaan is unavailable, allowing Odwa Ndungane’s promotion to the starting line up at wing.

Marius Joubert moves up onto the bench and Jandre Marais replaces du Toit.

Riaan Viljoen drops out of the squad and is replaced by Louis Ludik who has now recovered from an injury caused by dropping a weight on his own foot during training.
