Victor Benches for Bulls

TeamsheetsVictor Matfield will play his 125th Super Rugby from the wood this Saturday in the South African derby between the Bulls and the Sharks.

‘We all know what Victor is capable of. He showed in training and in our friendly match that he is still right up there among the best and I am confident that he will make a telling contribution when called upon,’ said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke.

New Springbok recruit Piet van Zyl and SA age group level star Handré Pollard join Matfield among the reserves.

Blue Bulls and Province tweak teams (team sheets)

The Bulls made three changes to the team that rocked the Cheetahs last weekend.Lions Fixtures

Bulls coach Pine Pienaar had this to say: ‘We did well last weekend and would like to build on that momentum,’ said Bulls coach Pine Pienaar. ‘As we had no real injuries, it made sense to play with the same group of players, but I have made some tweaks that I believe will create the necessary spark for us.’

Alistair Coetzee is pleased with the way his team put away the Sharks.

‘We have a winning culture and I’m pleased with that. Whether we get the bonus point or not, there’s a belief to never give up and lose games,’ said Coetzee.

‘I’m pleased with where we are after the first round. We had two draws and three wins but this competition is far from over. It’s so close, so we have to make sure we put the foot on the accelerator in the second half [of the season].’

Injury to regular captain Deon Fourie means that De Kock Steencamp will lead the side. UWC lock Taz Fuzani makes his Currie Cup debut and will look to use his size and power to give the men in hoops the go forward they need against the old rivals. Michael Rhodes moves to flank from lock.

Blue Bulls – 15 Jürgen Visser, 14 Sampie Mastriet, 13 Ulrich Beyers, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Akona Ndungane, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Rudy Paige, 8 Jono Ross (c), 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Wiaan Liebenberg, 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Frik Kirsten, 2 Mbongeni Mbonambi, 1 Marcel van der Merwe.

Blue Bulls hand out 5 debuts for Western Province clash (team sheet)

The Blue Bulls have picked an extremely young and inexperienced side to face the defending champions this weekend at Newlands. With a number of Bulls players either injured, rested or with the Boks, the men from Pretoria have been forced to pick a relatively unknown side – but a side that could contain many stars of the future.

On Debut:

  • Tony Jantjies (flyhalf)
  • Travis Ismaiel (wing)
  • Jono Ross (No 8)
  • Jacques du Plessis (flank)
  • and Wiaan Liebenberg (flank)

Jono Ross will captain the side on debut and new Springbok signing Waylon Murray has been included on the bench.

Blue Bulls – 15 Jürgen Visser, 14 Sampie Mastriet, 13 Ulrich Beyers, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Travis Ismaiel, 10 Tony Jantjies, 9 Rudy Paige, 8 Jono Ross (c), 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Wiaan Liebenberg, 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Frik Kirsten, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Morné Mellet.
Subs: 16 Callie Visagie, 17 Marcell van der Merwe, 18 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 19 Jean Cook, 20 Ruan Snyman, 21 Waylon Murray, 22 Clayton Blommetjies.

Bulls name team for important Stormers clash

This match is a must-win for the Bulls, not because if they don’t they will be kicked out of the competition, but because if they fail they have an almost insurmountable mountain to climb to lift a 4th Super Rugby trophy.

A loss at Newlands will see them come 2nd or 3rd, and if they end third they will have to play a home playoff and if they overcome that, an away semi-final, just to reach the championship game.

Bulls Team:

15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Dewald Potgieter (c), 7 Jacques Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Flip vd Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Dean Greyling

Replacements : 16 Callie Visagie, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Jacques du Plessis, 19 Jono Ross, 20 Rudy Paige, 21 Jurgen Visser, 22 Morne Mellet

Bulls remain unchanged for Kings

The Bulls will march on Port Elizabeth with the same starting team that narrowly beat the high flying Cheetahs Teamsheetsin Pretoria last weekend.

The only change comes on the bench.

–          Bjorn Basson returns from injury on the bench.

–          Ulrich Beyers drops out of the match day 22 altogether.

“We had to work very hard for the win against the Cheetahs and we want that momentum carried over into the Kings match, I am pleased with the way the combinations worked on the night and decided to stick with that. “ coach Frans Ludeke explained.

“We will need to be very structured and cohesive against the Kings, who will be fired up and spurred on by a sell-out crowd. To have an unchanged team will hopefully offset those early challenges,” Ludeke added.

Bulls captain Pierre Spies added: “We had to dig deep and needed all 22 in the squad to beat the Cheetahs, something that will work in our favour when facing the Kings for the first time.  We need to focus on our own game and not allow the crowd to get into the match, so need to have a strong start and keep up the effort,”

The Bulls travel to PE to take on the Kings on Saturday, 19:10 CAT (18:10 BST)
