Goosen looking for greener grass in France

Cheetahs fly-half Johan Goosen has used his team’s bye week to visit France and look at the possibility of furthering his career in Top RW Stamp14 Rugby.

The Cheetahs returned from their tour of Australia and New Zealand earlier this week and instead of taking the time to relax like his team mates the Bok number 10 is looking future employment opportunities.

The Volksblad website says that the twenty-one-year-old is visiting Parisian club Racing Metro where he is being considered as a replacement for Ireland and Lions number 10 Jonny Sexton.

Sexton joined Racing at the start of the European season last year on a two year contract but there has been speculation that the Irish Rugby Football Union want him back playing in Ireland.

Goosen has also been linked to Heineken Cup champions Toulon as Jonny Wilkinson is set to retire at the end of the season while back in South Africa the Bulls are said to be interested. Goosen has also been linked to Japanese clubs.

The Springbok number 10 is contracted to play for the Cheetahs until the end of the Currie Cup in October and it is unlikely that coach Naka Drotske will release him before then.

Teams that are interested in signing players are only permitted to officially negotiate with player 120 days before the end of their contract so it is unlikely that Goosen will sign before July the 1st.

It is not yet known whether Naka Drotske is aware of Goosen’s trip to France but Cheetahs managing director Harold Verster said that he had spoken to the player in Brisbane and he is confident that he will re-sign with the Cheetahs.
