Powerful Province repel Gallant Griquas (19-13)

Western Province, despite dominating most of the 80 minutes, were defending for their lives deep into injury time against a never-say-die Griquas outfit. Results

Rain marred a game that started with a frenetic pace, as both teams ran the ball from all over. Province dominated position and territory for most of the first half, but never got the points to show for it.

A slew of handling errors, and players forcing the last pass, meant the men from Cape Town had to wait for a sniping dart from scrumhalf Nic Groom, before they could breathe easily. This did not last long as the Kimberly men chipped away at the lead and through an intercept on the brink of full-time, set about attempting to spoil Western Province’s unbeaten run this season.

But Province stood firm and some great goal line defending by the pack, with prop Steven Kitshoff being the stand out, saw them come away with a hard-earned 19 – 13 win . A win that sees them cement their place at the top of the log.

Western Province:

Try: Nic Groom

Conversion: Kurt Coleman

Penalties: Coleman (3), Demetri Catrakilis

Try: Nico Scheepers

Conversion: Scheepers

Penalties: Francois Brummer, Gouws Prinsloo
