Kidney guided Ireland to the Six Nations Grand Slam and was awarded world coach of the year in 2009 but has since failed to impress and slumped to a 5 place finish in this year’s competition.
The announcement was made after an in depth post Six Nations review by the IRFU and Les Kiss has been appointed as interim coach after Kidney’s contract is over. The IRFU have begun searching for an appropriate full time replacement and will look to appoint him after the mid year North American tour. He will be assisted by Gert Smal and Anthony Foley.
“We would like to sincerely thank Declan for his commitment to Irish Rugby. His contribution and involvement across the spectrum of Irish rugby delivered Under Age, Provincial, Grand Slam and Triple Crown success, and epitomises his passion, belief and commitment to the game. With a host of new and emerging talent at every level, and despite the clear challenges ahead, we are confident of securing another world-class coach to work with this talented and ambitious group of players.” Said Philip Browne, IRFU CEO in a statement today.
