Hooker Callie Visagie has chosen to ply his trade at the Bulls during the 2013 Super Rugby season and agreed a loan deal with the franchise which will see him stationed at Loftus Versfeld for the duration of the competition.
While his agent has confirmed that he has extended his contract with the GLRU, his need to play Super Rugby has driven him to join the Bulls so for one season while the Lions take their Super Rugby sabbatical. He will still be available for the union for the Currie Cup.
While this is a great move for Visagie, it is puzzling to think why the Bulls would make this move… The already have Springbok Chiliboy Ralepelle, Bulls stalwart Willie Wepener and their SAU20 hooker Bongi Mbonambi. Equally puzzling is that the GLRU are willing to release him after their CEO Ruben Moggee made the statement that Lions players would only be loaned out if they were going to play a role in that teams match day 22 on a regular basis.
“We have to make sure the player is comfortable with any move. The other factor is to make sure he is in the starting 22 and to ensure the player brings some experience of a Super Rugby campaign back with him…We’re not going to send our players to be part of an extended squad or be on the bench the whole time, they will need to get game time,” Moggee explained.
With the Bulls talent at this position Visagie would realistically be placed 3rd on the depth chart behind Wepener and if he were to jump ahead of the proven Bulls back up it will surely cause unrest in the squad.
